Ethiopia’s Kegna Beverages Launches Major Brewery in Ginchi, Boosting Local Economy
Ginchi, Ethiopia – June 15, 2025
Kegna Beverages S.C., a homegrown Ethiopian company, has officially commenced operations at its state-of-the-art brewery in Ginchi Town, Oromia Region, marking a significant milestone in the country’s beverage industry. The factory, which spans over 100 hectares, represents a $250 million investment and is poised to become a key player in Ethiopia’s competitive beer market.
Project Highlights
1. Community-Driven Ownership
Kegna Beverages was incorporated in 2017 with over 5,000 shareholders, including local farmers and youth, embodying the Afaan Oromo word “Kegna” (meaning “ours”). This model aligns with the Oromia Economic Revolution, aimed at fostering regional prosperity through inclusive entrepreneurship.
2. Production Capacity:
The brewery has an initial annual capacity of 3 million hectoliters of beer, with plans to double output to 6 million hectoliters by 2029. The facility also plans to produce malt drinks, energy drinks, juices, and mineral water in subsequent phases.
3. Employment and Economic Impact:
The project has created 450 direct jobs so far, with a target of 1,000 employees. It is expected to stimulate ancillary sectors, including agriculture, as the brewery sources local barley to reduce import dependency.
4. Challenges and Market Competition:
Kegna faces hurdles such as Ethiopia’s 40% excise tax on malt-based beers and competition from global brands like Heineken and BGI (Castel). However, its focus on affordability and local identity may give it an edge.
5. Infrastructure and Sustainability:
Located 80 km west of Addis Ababa, the site will benefit from upcoming road upgrades to ease distribution. The company emphasizes environmental and social sustainability, with rigorous impact assessments conducted during planning.
Recent Launch
On June 14, 2025, Kegna unveiled its flagship KEGNA Premium Lager Beer (5% ABV) in Addis Ababa, available in 33cl/50cl bottles and 30L kegs. The launch celebrated the brand’s fusion of local heritage with German brewing technology (via partners Brewtech and Krones).
Future Plans
Kegna aims to expand its product line and distribution network, leveraging youth associations for nationwide sales. With Ethiopia’s beer demand projected to hit 27,000 metric tons by 2028, the company is strategically positioned for growth.
